During the spring semester, CDHS seniors Avery Tapke, Grace Patterson, Max Burgmeier, Jake Bixby, Keegan Peterson, and Natalie Cagle participated in internships through the Cooperative Education program. This work-based learning course, taught by Mr. Law, is part of the school’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. The Cooperative Education internship experience allows students to explore potential career paths, develop essential workplace skills, and gain insight into related college majors. Some internships even provide paid opportunities, depending on the placement site. This spring, students interned in a variety of fields. Avery Tapke gained hands-on experience in veterinary care at DeWitt Pet Hospital. Grace Patterson interned with the DeWitt Police Department, learning about law enforcement and public service. Max Burgmeier and Jake Bixby worked alongside Activities Director/Dean of Students Erik Johnston, gaining a behind-the-scenes look at athletics and event coordination. Keegan Peterson supported communications efforts as the CDCSD marketing intern, and Natalie Cagle partnered with Holly Hansen as an AmeriCorps Student Leader, helping fellow students plan for post-secondary education. Last Friday, students wrapped up their internships by presenting their experiences and key takeaways. From learning several soft skills to understanding the demands of various industries, each student gained valuable insight that will help guide their future plans. Way to go, Sabers! Thank you to our local partners and businesses who help provide these incredible opportunities for our students! If you are a CDHS student interested in an internship, please reach out to Mr. Law. 💜❄️💛 We’re proud to share that our 4th–12th grade students raised MORE THAN $15,000 for Special Olympics Iowa through the Cool School Polar Plunge fundraiser! Even more meaningful—part of the funds raised will directly benefit our very own Special Olympics athletes. To celebrate their incredible efforts, students took a chilly dive into icy waters yesterday morning during a fun and festive event. Fifth grader Eric Nicholas and sixth grader Brayden Porter earned the honor of jumping in first as this year’s top fundraisers. Way to go, Sabers! Congratulations to all who participated—you did an outstanding job! We are so proud of our students and staff for consistently going above and beyond to support, include, and uplift others. And a heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated! Horticulture students in the Agriculture Education Department had the opportunity to tour Wallaces Garden Center in Bettendorf, where they learned about the technology used in the greenhouses, as well as plant care, marketing, advertising, and seed propagation. Students even had the chance to make their own seed tape. The next stop on the tour was Crow Valley Golf Club, where they met with Superintendent Tim and Assistant Superintendent Levi to explore all aspects of turf management. Students learned about irrigation systems, soil composition, mowing equipment, chemical and fertilizer applications, and spoke with the club’s horticulturist. They also had hands-on experience operating a variety of equipment, including GPS sprayers, greens mowers, aerators, rollers, and moisture testers and more! A special thank you to Wallace’s Garden Center and Crow Valley Golf Club for providing such an outstanding and educational experience! #gosabers #centraldewittcd #cdhs #horticulture #horticulturestudents #handsonlearning #fieldtrip #saberssucceeding

🕵️‍♂️ Detective Scott Wainwright from the Clinton County Sheriff's Office stopped by to talk with our 5th graders about crime scenes and evidence collection! His visit was the perfect kickoff to their final Amplify unit, where students will put their scientific knowledge to the test as they investigate “The Case of the Missing Fossil.” This unit invites students to dive into chemistry and explore how matter can be transformed through physical and chemical changes. Our students are excited to become young detectives and scientists!
