On Wednesday, our Central DeWitt FFA members spent the morning giving back to the community during their annual “Give Back, Kick Back Day.” This year, students helped out nin local businesses—lending a helping hand, tackling projects, and making a positive impact across our community.

We’re proud to see our students stepping up, building connections, and giving back to the businesses that continually support our schools! Great job, Sabers! 💜💛

Mrs. Lueders’ WIN students held a “grand opening” for their food truck projects on Wednesday, when they presented their concepts to other CDIS classes!

Since January, these students have worked in teams to design their own food truck, creating menus, setting prices, managing budgets, and developing marketing strategies. They also learned firsthand from local food truck owner Mrs. Linda Jacobsen, who shared valuable insight into the realities of running a food truck business.

The presentations showcased not only their creativity, but also their problem-solving, teamwork, and entrepreneurial thinking. From unique menus to eye-catching displays, these students truly delivered! Students who attended the presentations were also invited to rate each food truck on elements like the name, merchandise, overall creativity, and menu options—adding an extra layer of real-world feedback to the experience.

What a creative, hands-on project that built a wide range of real-world skills—way to go, Sabers! 💜💛

🐣 After 21 days of anticipation, seven baby chicks hatched this week in Mrs. Griep’s 8th grade science classroom!

These chicks will head to Mrs. Griep’s farm, where they’ll grow and thrive. And in a full-circle moment, the eggs they produce will eventually make their way back to the classroom, giving next year’s students the chance to experience the magic all over again.

What an egg-cellent (and adorable) way for students to see science in action! 💜💛

🛍 CDIS students recently stepped into the role of entrepreneurs, turning their creativity into real-world business experiences!

Last week, CDIS students took part in the “Opportunity for Entrepreneurs” market, where 34 student businesses created and sold their own products to students and staff. From developing ideas and calculating costs to branding, production, and sales, students experienced what it takes to bring a product to market. The results were impressive—nearly $1,900 in sales in just four days!

This week, that same entrepreneurial spirit continued with Mrs. Hahn’s WIN class, where students designed, created, and sold handmade Mother’s Day and Father’s Day cards. Just like the market project, students practiced creativity, planning, and communication while producing something meaningful for others.

Together, these experiences highlight what makes our schools special—providing opportunities that go beyond traditional learning. Our students are building creativity, confidence, responsibility, and important life skills they’ll carry far beyond their school years.

Way to go, CDIS entrepreneurs! 👏

🩺 Happy National School Nurses Day! Today we’re celebrating our amazing district health team—School Nurse Ann Bixby and Health & Nursing Assistants Kenzie Riedesel and Sarah Berner!

They play a vital role in supporting both student health and academic success—understanding that when students are healthy, they are better able to learn and thrive. They also help train and prepare our emergency response teams, ensuring we are ready when it matters most. And that’s just a small part of what they do each day.

Their impact is felt across our district, every day—keeping our students and staff healthy, safe, and supported. 💜💛

💜💛 Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

Ask a student what they remember most about school, and it’s rarely a worksheet or a test—it’s the teacher who noticed them, encouraged them, challenged them, and believed in them.
Take a moment to watch this video and help us celebrate the incredible educators who make Central DeWitt a place where students feel seen, supported, and inspired. ❤️

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

In March, Central DeWitt High School Art Teacher Cassie Garrity earned national recognition for her work in arts education at the NAEA National Convention 2026 in Chicago—a reflection of her dedication, expertise, and leadership in the field.

Ms. Garrity received both a Western Region Award and a National Leadership Award through the National Art Education Association (NAEA), one of the highest honors for art educators. These recognitions highlight her impact on teaching practices and her contributions to advancing arts education.

Ms. Garrity, who serves as a Visual Arts Teacher Leader for the NAEA’s Connected Arts Networks (CAN), also presented four sessions at the convention, sharing innovative strategies and classroom practices with educators from across the country.

Her presentation, “Think Like an Artist: Rethinking Assessment Practices in the Arts” was recently published as an article in Arts Education Policy Review, expanding its impact beyond the conference. The article explores how shifting assessment practices from grading to learning transformed her classroom—all sparked by an unexpected source of inspiration.

In her classroom, Ms. Garrity uses assessment to guide growth rather than simply measure outcomes, encouraging students to engage in creative risk-taking, thoughtful critique, and deeper artistic thinking as they develop and refine their work.

Ms. Garrity’s achievements and well-deserved recognition, which also include being a National Board Certified Teacher and the 2025 Iowa Art Educator of the Year, speak to her influence as an educator and leader in the field of arts education.

Central DeWitt is incredibly fortunate to have educators like Ms. Garrity who not only inspire students daily, but also elevate the teaching profession. Her work is a point of pride for our district, and we are grateful for her continued commitment, leadership, and passion she brings to Central DeWitt each day.

You can purchase a copy of Ms. Garrity’s article here: https://bit.ly/3QE5m7f

🍽️ Five CDHS culinary students had an incredible hands-on experience on April 24th at the Culinary Showcase hosted by Scott Community College. Accompanied by FCS teacher Ms. Sullivan, the students explored micro plating—an approach that emphasizes minimalist, precise, and artistic food presentation.

They fully immersed themselves in the learning process, collaborating and refining their skills throughout the day to create visually striking and well-balanced dishes.

It was an outstanding experience and a great showcase of CDHS talent—keep cooking up amazing things! 👏
