🎉 ❄️ CDHS kicked off Thanksgiving break with a little fun at our Winter Assembly!

Students got fired up for the upcoming winter sports season as the school recognized all of their incredible athletes. Then the teachers took the stage with an epic lip-sync battle—and after some unforgettable performances, Mr. LaPage, Ms. Sullivan, Mrs. Jory, and Mr. Heiting came out on top! 👏🔥

A huge shoutout to Mrs. Moulton, Ms. Garrity, Mrs. Grantz, Mrs. Schaller, and Mrs. Barnes who also brought the energy and made the assembly a blast!

Students kept the excitement rolling with a competitive pizza box challenge, where the last student standing with their box balanced on their hand claimed the win. And of course… they wrapped it all up with a crowd-favorite T-shirt toss! 👕✨

Watch Lip Sync Battle Highlights here: https://youtu.be/OLvOJvQvjK8

What a great way to head into break—Go Sabers! 💜💛

Turkey, a pumpkin and pie

Thanks to the hard work of our National Honor Society students—and the generosity of our community—25 local families will have everything they need to celebrate Thanksgiving.

NHS students assembled 25 Thanksgiving baskets filled with all the fixings for a traditional holiday meal, along with additional non-perishable foods and hygiene items. This project was made possible by incredible community support:

• Cram Chiropractic donated laundry detergent
• Kwik Star contributed a $200 gift card that provided milk, bread, butter, and eggs
• MJ’s East donated milk and eggs
• Community members donated non-perishable food and hygiene products
• Central DeWitt employee jeans days raised funds that helped purchase additional needed items

We are truly thankful to have students who lead with compassion and a community that shows up to support our families. Your kindness and generosity are making a meaningful difference this Thanksgiving.💜💛

🛠Our Building Trades program at CDHS is switching gears to create an even stronger hands-on learning experience for our students!

This year, students are constructing sheds from the ground up, gaining experience in every phase of the construction process—from concrete work and framing to roofing and finishing. The goal: give every student a full, start-to-finish building experience.

In the past, students remodeled homes, which offered valuable skills but didn’t allow them to see an entire project unfold. Instructor Michael Marshall said the shift was driven by two main factors.

“For one, the housing market is changing. It's hard to fix them up, sell them, and even make any money,” Mr. Marshall said.

He also explained that the old approach narrowed what students could learn. Since each renovation project took several years, individual classes only handled certain phases—like demolition, insulation, or drywall—meaning students walked away with only a fraction of the skills the program could offer.

“They weren't getting to see the whole process,” Mr. Marshall said. “And I really think it's valuable for the students to be able to see it from moving the dirt to putting the last piece of siding on.”

With the new shed projects, every student now gains comprehensive experience that better prepares them for a future in a variety of trades.

Currently, the students are working on a shed at Westbrook Park and hope to do more community projects in the future. With interest growing quickly, the program is booked with requests for the next two years — a testament to the quality of work and the impact Mr. Marshall and his students are making.

As the program transitions, Central DeWitt Community School District is accepting proposals for the purchase of the property students previously worked on in DeWitt. Those interested in learning more— including property details, submission requirements, and timelines can visit https://www.cd-csd.org/article/2530877

Offers must be received by Superintendent Stephanie Mishler at the District Administration Center at 1010 4th Ave. East, Door #15, DeWitt, IA 52742, before 12:00 p.m. on December 5, 2025.

We can’t wait to see our students gain real-world skills, support our community, and learn from local experts—this is an exciting new chapter for the CDHS Building Trades program! 💜💛

💜 It’s National Substitute Teacher Day! Our incredible substitute teachers step in at a moment’s notice to keep learning on track, bring calm to the chaos, and help students stay focused and moving forward. In long-term roles, they provide consistency, build meaningful relationships, and create a steady sense of routine for students.

Their willingness to help also gives teachers the space to care for their health, attend trainings, accompany students to events, or manage family needs—knowing their classrooms are in great hands.

To every substitute teacher: thank you for your commitment, your adaptability, and the heart you bring to our schools. You truly make a difference and we appreciate you! 💜💛
