REMINDER! This Thursday, Central DeWitt, Calamus Wheatland and Northeast High School culinary students are coming together to host a delicious made-from-scratch feast for you! The event will be held in the Northeast High School Cafeteria. Dine in is available from 4:30 -6:30 p.m. Carry outs are available from 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for kids (12 and under) and must be purchased in advance at Calamus Wheatland, Central DeWitt or Northeast High School offices. Proceeds from this event will be split between the three schools and go toward food labs and new cooking equipment. Thank you for supporting these hard-working culinary students! 💜💛 Congratulations to our October 2023 district Student of the Month Noah Speas! He is featured in today's edition of The Observer - DeWitt, Iowa thanks to our friends at First Central State Bank. When Noah Speas chose Peer STEM as an elective this year, he wasn’t sure what to expect. Peer STEM is a class in which middle school students participate and support STEM students with special needs in learning computer science skills, engineering, and more. Noah had no idea he would learn much more than science, technology, engineering and math. His experiences in Peer STEM have also taught him the importance of patience and perseverance, that everyone matters, and everyone can succeed no matter their abilities. Peer STEM teachers Ms. Smith, Mrs. Jackson, and Mrs. Walsh, who nominated Noah for Student of the Month, all agree that he perfectly displays the qualities expected of a Peer STEM student. “He shows great patience while working alongside various class members, often rephrasing the directions or modeling the expectations for the project,” they said. “He does a great job of including everyone and making sure they all feel valued not only in class, but everywhere in the school!” Noah is a great role model because of his empathy for all students, as well as his willingness to always lend a helping hand. Eight CDHS Future Business Leaders of America members traveled to Des Moines to attend the State Fall Leadership Conference this week. Members attended breakout rooms, and learned ways to improve our chapter and lead more efficiently. They also met people from other Iowa FBLA chapters. This past week junior Katlin Truelsen had the chance to meet with world leaders as a Global Youth Institute Scholar as part of the World Food Prize Foundation. She discussed solutions to global food insecurity and represented farmers and the important role they play in this issue. What a great experience! Third grade students have been studying the human body and yesterday they learned even more about the body’s different systems from two local experts. Dr. Stephanie Makela, a pediatric chiropractor, presented on the skeletal system and how it is interconnected with other systems while Amy Fox, an OR nurse, shared her expertise about various working parts within each system (our brain, heart, veins, etc.). The students have been working hard on learning all of the human body systems and they surprised both presenters with the knowledge they already had!
