This past weekend Mr. Greubel presented a clinic titled "All-State Prep! A Rural School Approach to Play the Game!" to a roomful of 50 other band directors at the Iowa Bandmasters Association annual conference. This is Mr. Greubel's fourth time presenting at the IBA Conference representing Central DeWitt and the work that he and our students do together. Mr. Greubel is a past NEIBA representative on the IBA Concert Band Affairs, serving for six years and the chair for three years. Mr. Greubel is also an active adjudicator for the IBA, the IHSMA, and other local and area schools. Mr. Greubel and his students actively host several festivals for the IHSMA (state), NEIBA (district), the MAC conference, as well as the All-Iowa Concert Band Festival yearly. For the last 11 years, the DeWitt Community Hospital Foundation, in collaboration with the LincolnWay Community Foundation, has provided free bike helmets to second-grade students in local elementary schools. This year, they formed a new partnership with Central DeWitt High School's Business Communication class, led by Christopher Law. He saw the helmet giveaway as an ideal service-learning project for his students. The class took on various roles to support the project including organizing helmet sizes, communicating with teachers, scheduling, and putting helmets together with collateral. Last week, they handed out over 230 helmets to second graders at Ekstrand Elementary, St. Joseph Catholic School, Delwood Elementary, Northeast Elementary, and Calamus-Wheatland Elementary School. This experience not only provided extra hands to help the hospital foundation, it also empowered Central DeWitt students to play an active role in helping their community.
