Welcome to Central DeWitt High School, home of the Sabers!

I am extremely excited to begin my 11th year as principal as we begin the 2017-18 school year.  I look forward to continuing a great working relationship with the community, parents, and students of Central DeWitt Community School District.   It is exhilarating for our students and staff to work in this state-of-the-art facility.

I know first hand what an exceptional staff Central DeWitt High School has after working in the District for 20 years as a teacher, assistant principal, and currently as principal.  Throughout the past school year, I repeatedly experienced the dedication of our staff members.  I look forward to working with our faculty during this school year to help students reach their maximum potential.  Our teachers will continue to work diligently at building positive working relationships with our students.   We are making a difference in the lives of our students.  I truly feel that I have the best job in America!

Last year our Iowa Assessments were in the 90th percentile in all areas for all grades.  Once again, our students came through with better scores across the board as we improved in 9 out of 9 categories!  This is an accomplishment we are very proud of, as we not only have some of the best scores in the area, but in the State as well.  Central DeWitt High School has an abundance of highly motivated students and we are very pleased with their success.  Central DeWitt High offers multiple “dual” credit courses and have had students graduate with 50+ college credits to take with them to the post-secondary life.  Our hopes are to have enough offered on our campus the next few years so students can achieve an Associate Degree before high school graduation.

Our faculty continues to work very hard at improving teaching methods to meet the demands of the 21st Century Learner.  We have been really focused on Standard Based Grading as we continue to explore how to make this a reality.

Central DeWitt High School’s faculty will be participating in some fantastic professional development this fall. Teachers will be grouped into PLC’s (Professional Learning Communities), for the second year.  Collaboration among teachers has helped us grow in the classrooms.

Central DeWitt High School has been a 1 to 1 school for five years.  Both our teachers and students are very enthusiastic about the opportunity to get new laptops this year.  There are many exciting things happening at the high school.  We have embraced change to make this a great place to learn and teach.

Remember that schools operate most efficiently when there is a cooperative effort of parents, students, faculty, and administration.  We are a team that functions best when we are all “pulling the rope in the same direction.”  Please consider logging on to Infinite Campus to keep informed on the grades of your child.  We have a goal of having 100% of our parents using this great tool to keep informed about their child’s grades and events at the high school.  If you have lost your login information please ask at registration or give the high school a call at 659-0715.  Please let us know if you are having problems with this valuable tool.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me via e-mail, george.pickup@cd-csd.org, or by phone 563-659-0715. Thanks for visiting our web site.

Have a great school year!

Yours in education,
