Congratulations to our district Student of the Month, 1st Grader, Abigail Thole!! She was featured in the Jan. 29th edition of The Observer – DeWitt, Iowa thanks to our friends at First Central State Bank!
1st Grader at Ekstrand Elementary
Parents: Michael and Katie Thole
Abigail Thole was nominated by her teacher Lauren Petersen because she is a fantastic example of what it means to be a SABER. She consistently goes out of her way to do her best work and encourages others to do the same.
She is a leader in her classroom and sets the stage when it comes to acting out the E (everyone matters) and the B (believe in yourself) of SABER. Abigail is genuinely concerned with how others are treated, encouraging her classmates to apologize and make situations better when something doesn’t feel right.
First grade is discussing culture this semester. Her class started this conversation by bringing up individual values and creating “value trees.”
“This was a hard concept to grasp as many of our values can often feel like things such as our devices or a favorite toy. We elaborated on the idea that our values are deep inside us and not always something physical that can be touched.” Mrs. Petersen said.
On Abigail’s “value tree” she listed family, strength, energy, independence, and friends as the things most important to her.
Mrs. Petersen added, “Many of these values resonate with me as an adult and this goes on to prove that Abbie is consistently digging a little deeper when it comes to her first grade education. She is truly a valued member of our classroom community, as well as our community at Ekstrand.”
